In the application that was recently submitted to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, the county administrative board and the municipality of Sundsvall apply for SEK 74 million in state funds for the remediation of the poisoned area around the closed factory at Nyhamn in Njurunda.

In total, the remediation is estimated to cost SEK 92 million over a four-year period, of which SCA, which has conducted operations on the site, will avoid paying 18 million. In order to get rid of the old environmental sins, the remaining 74 million has to be paid with tax funds.

Dioxins and arsenic

The area is heavily contaminated with, among other things, high levels of dioxins and arsenic but also completely unknown toxins. How soon the remediation work can start is unclear at present.

- At best in the next year, but we still have no timetable, says Sven-Åke Westman, project manager at Sundsvall municipality, who points out that you must first get a clear sign for the funding from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.

Further remediation

An adjacent industrial area will also be decontaminated at a cost that was previously estimated at approximately SEK 45 million, but no application for government funding has yet been submitted for this project.
