"The problem of the law on (deputy. - RT ) immunity has been discussed for many years ... There is a belief in society that it is worth removing immunity from deputies - how they will improve and will not get involved in not quite legal actions, ”Svetov believes.

According to the political scientist, there is also the opposite effect when the deputy is afraid of criminal prosecution for his views.

“Immediately Zelensky made a statement that he guarantees immunity from persecution to the current deputies for their opinion, voting and statements. It turns out that there will be no immunity, but immunity appears. It will be necessary to look at the practice of applying this law in order to understand how and how it works effectively, ”said Svetov.

According to him, the adoption by the Rada of such a law is "a response to the request of society."

Earlier, the parliament of Ukraine adopted in final reading a bill on the abolition of parliamentary immunity from January 1, 2020.

In particular, the norm is repealed according to which people's deputies cannot be prosecuted, detained or arrested without the consent of the Verkhovna Rada.

As Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky emphasized, the bill on depriving deputies of immunity concerns only the possibility of bringing them to criminal liability, but does not provide for the lifting of immunity for political decisions.
