The municipal equalization system is simply about the fact that wealthy municipalities in growth areas share their tax revenues to poorer municipalities, mainly in sparsely populated areas.

Karlstad loser

Now the system is being redone and even more money is to be redistributed. In Värmland, most of the municipalities win the change. The big loser is Karlstad.

- Virtually all others receive plus. That's good, but I think the state should stand for that money. The fact that some municipalities like Karlstad have to pay so much more just creates contradictions, says Per-Samuel Nisser (M).

Exactly how much more money Karlstad Municipality must contribute is not yet clear, but according to the municipality's own calculations it is about SEK 500 per inhabitant.

"The state should stand for the money"

Per-Samuel Nisser believes that the state should instead pay for the extra money.

- We will lose between 40 and 50 million a year. This means that we have to start cutting the budget for next year. Should such major changes be made so quickly, I think it is reasonable for the state to pay for it.

He has now written an open letter to the Warmland MPs asking him to say no to the proposal when it comes to voting in Parliament.

"Necessary for equality"

However, the MP Gunilla Svantorp (S) has no such plans.

- Värmland as a whole is a winner in this system. Now places like Filipstad, Hagfors and Säffle that have had the biggest challenges in recent years get more money, and then someone must also join and pay.

Party mate Mikael Dahlqvist from just Hagfors agrees.

- This system is necessary to ensure equality in the country, no matter where you live. Karlstad gets our pre-trained youth instead.
