It is now over two years since Johan Gustafsson was released after being kidnapped for over five and a half years in Mali. Now, the documentary "Prisoner of al-Qaeda" will be shown on SVT Play and on SVT 1 on Tuesday, September 3 at 9 pm. The film is made by Marika Griesel and Simon Stanford.

In the film we get to follow the family's agony before the announcement of Johan's release in June 2017. We met Johan Gustafsson in connection with the documentary being premiered at the Gummifabriken in Värnamo.

Hear him talk about the time in captivity in the clip above and see some tastings from the documentary.

Scenes from the Kalahari Desert

The documentary is recorded in Stockholm, Åminne, Malmö, South Africa and in the Kalahari desert. The film contains some, as director Simon Stanford puts it, carefully dramatized scenes. Some of them are recorded in the Kalahari desert because it was not considered safe to go to Mali.

- I liked being back in the desert, I almost look too happy with it in the film, says Johan Gustafsson and smiles when we meet him for the film premiere at the Rubber Factory.
