03 September 2019At least 16 people, all civilians, were killed and 120 others injured in the nightly attack in Kabul, capital of Afghanistan, according to a new budget provided this morning by a spokesman for the Ministry of the Interior. "The explosion was caused by a tractor loaded with explosives," spokesman Nasrat Rahimi said in a message to the media. Five attackers were killed and search and rescue operations continued until 05:00 local time (1:30 Italian), he said.

The attack, claimed by the Taliban, occurred near the vast Green Village complex, home to aid agencies and international organizations. It happened while the American envoy Zalmay Khalilzad is in Kabul to discuss with the Afghan officials the draft agreement between the Americans and the Taliban.

Residents of the Qabil Bai neighborhood, where the Green Village is located, staged a protest this morning, burning tires and blocking an artery near the site of the explosion. According to the inhabitants, the presence of foreigners is a danger to the neighborhood. "We want these strangers to leave our neighborhood. This is not the first time we suffer because of them. Every time they are targeted, our men, women and children are killed. We don't want them here anymore," said one of them.
