Hunting in all forms, dog breeding and hunting tests are Mats Haapaniemi's great interests. He is also a board member and wildlife officer in Kiruna Hunting and Fisheries Association representing about 2,500 members.

- Outdoor life and hunting are one of the big reasons why I live up here, he says.

The right to hunt and fishing has also become a loaded issue between hunting-interested local residents and Sami villages. Mats Haapaniemi believes that the Sami villages are advancing their positions, among other things by requesting hunting calls for increasingly large areas of the county administrative board. The Sami villages point out that the cancellations are solely about peacekeeping.

"A pure provocation"

Mats Haapaniemi also sees Girja's legal process against the state as a positioning.

- I see it as a pure provocation, he says.

He had rather wished that local hunter interests and Sami villages could agree on the hunt through consensus solutions.
