For three months, a scent of contestation reigns over the semi-autonomous territory. After the violence this weekend between police and demonstrators, new episode today with these images of human chains in the Hong Kong subway, formed by high school students, dressed in black, and sensitive to the democratic cause. And this on the first day of a boycott campaign, supposed to last two weeks. Back to school is today. Back to university, it's tomorrow. What is the situation in front of the Chinese University of Hong Kong?

With our special correspondent in Hong Kong, Stéphane Lagarde

A little over three hours ago, on September 2nd, a tide of umbrellas appeared on the campus of Hong Kong Chinese University. This is not a coincidence because it is one of the three major universities of the Special Administrative Region. It is therefore one of the symbols of student life that has been chosen by student leaders.

boycott

And it was this afternoon that they decided to make their own ceremony that had been canceled by the authorities. A ceremony of re-entry, but under the slogan obviously not of the return, but a boycott of the courses that should last, according to them, the whole week. We will see if it holds or not tomorrow, Tuesday, September 3.

All around, there are T-shirt students who are looking for shelter because it is starting to rain. There is the storm of late afternoon, of the evening. The organizers talk about 10,000 students this afternoon. A figure probably exaggerated.

Students who said that it is obviously easier to boycott classes than to go into tear gas and demonstrations. Some of these students are leaving or have gone elsewhere to join a city park where another rally is being held, that of the Confederation of Trade Unions, which is calling for a general strike.

" The end is near "

For its part, Beijing multiplies the intimidations: "The end is near for the movement," warned last night, the agency China New.
