Congolese head of state Denis Sassou Nguesso, whose last visit to France in November 2018, during the celebration of the armistice, left Brazzaville in the night of Sunday to Monday for Paris where he will be received on Tuesday 3 September at the Élysée by his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron with whom he will discuss issues related to the climate, the economy, the internal politics of the Congo and Libya.

According to a source at the Presidency of the Republic, the climate and the environment will dominate the talks between the two heads of state. " As the rainforest burns, the Congo, which accounts for 10 percent of the Congo Basin's forests, must attract more attention from the international community to protect the world's second-largest ecological lung ," the source said.

In addition, the visit of the Congolese leader in Paris comes less than two months after the signing of an agreement between his country and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). In the spring of 2018 France had conditioned aid of more than 88 billion CFA francs by signing this agreement which is considered binding by Brazzaville because it comes with 48 measures that the Congo must apply to the letter.

" The way is now open for the release of this aid from Paris, " said a diplomatic source, saying that there is a series of cooperation agreements during the working visit of President Sassou Nguesso.

Politically, the presidential election of 2021 in Congo could be evoked by the two leaders. The Constitution adopted in pain in 2015 allows Sassou Nguesso to renew in 2021.

Last week, the French president wanted the African Union (AU) to play its full role in the Libyan issue. The issue should be raised with his counterpart who chairs the AU High Level Committee on Libya, according to another diplomatic source.

French side, this appointment is not on the agenda of President Macron. The Elysee did not wish to confirm the arrival of Denis Sassou-Nguesso.
