Mohamed Seif Eldin-Cairo

Under the label "Stop Torture in Egypt" and "I Was Tortured," the Nadim Center for Rehabilitation of Victims of Violence and Torture launched an online campaign on September 4 and 5 to curb the phenomenon in the country.

The Nadeem Center chose this date (September 4 and 5) as an alternative to the UN conference, which was supposed to be held in the same period and was postponed indefinitely by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), following human rights and media criticism of Cairo's choice of venue.

PCHR called on all concerned parties, whether directly harmed by torture and ill-treatment or those monitoring and documenting this crime, to record on the same day on the stories, statistics and testimonies of torture and ill-treatment in Egyptian places of detention.

On August 30, 2008, the human rights organization Comiti Four Vestes documented 4,820 cases of abuse inside and outside official detention centers during the first half of 2019, including 27 cases of torture against 159 detainees, three of whom died of torture.
