Pope Francis created a surprise on Sunday, September 1, announcing, after the prayer of the Angelus, the forthcoming creation of ten new cardinals. They will receive their bar card on October 5 at a presbytery in the Vatican. These new cardinals, who come from Africa, Indonesia, Cuba or Luxembourg, once again show the orientations that the sovereign pontiff wishes to instill in the Church.

One of the figures on this list announced by the pope is certainly that of Bishop Fridolin Ambongo , the Archbishop of Kinshasa, who, like his predecessor, Laurent Monsengwo, will wear purple, a sign of the importance for Francis of the Congolese Church.

Africa will be doubly represented in the next consistory since the Archbishop of Rabat, Mgr Cristobal Lopez Romero will also be created cardinal, it was he who welcomed the Pope last March during his visit to Morocco . An archbishop strongly committed to welcoming migrants from the African subcontinent.

This list of future cardinals sends a message from a Church always ready to open its doors. One of the surprises is the appointment as Cardinal of the person in charge of migration in the Curia, the Jesuit Michael Czerny, Undersecretary of the Migrants and Refugees Section of the Dicastery for the Service of Integral Human Development.

Another figure in this list is that of Bishop Jean-Claude Hollerich, the Archbishop of Luxembourg, who also presides over the Episcopal Conferences of the European Union, a Jesuit too, like the Argentine pope.
