Maize's dad was a water rater and the family moved around where the job was. Both he and Maij's big brother Sten worked on the construction of Sandöbron by the Ångermanälven river.

She and a friend were out in the garden on the fateful day of 1939.

- Then we get to hear this creature that became and I say "was it Sandöbron that raged?" Then we laughed because we thought "man god it can't crash," recalls May Astby.

18 men lost their lives

But May had been right, the 264 meter long wooden arch that formed the mold for the new bridge had given way. Work on the casting went on for the full and many workers followed along into the breed. 18 men died and many were injured.

One of those who did not return home that day was her big brother Sten. He turned 23 years old and his body was never found.

- No, he's here. He and one more. I think he is from Frånö.

Dad worked on the building

Maize's father, Rickard Eriksson, passed the life-hanger, his shift had not begun.

- He lay at home and rested because he would go on the night shift that night. My brother had gone out to work until two o'clock. It must be extremely difficult for Dad to work until the bridge was completed. It was inaugurated in 1943 and dad was here all the time. He worked on this bridge then and knew that his son was underneath there.

May want to see the memorial

On the day eighty years after the disaster, May has a wish for the municipality of Kramfors.

- For me, it would be enough if you made a nice painting with the names of those who perished in the accident, says May.

May Astby's wish fell into good ground at the Kramfors Municipal Council, which was in place at Saturday's memorial ceremony at the bridge party.

- Yes, I do not reject it, but I think it is a thought you should bring along and act for, says Jan Sahlén (S).

White rose to big brother

May was one of the approximately fifty people who on Saturday honored the perished with flowers at the bridge foundation.

- Yes I bought a flower and since it was 18 red roses I bought a white rose. It is clear that I honor everyone who has perished, but my thoughts go especially to Sten, says May.
