  • Analysis: An outbreak of listeria and doubts

First it was a health-only crisis, then it resulted in a political crisis and, in the end, it has also become an institutional crisis . The listeriosis outbreak in Andalusia has caused an unprecedented confrontation between the Board and the City Council of Seville, the two administrations with public health competencies and those who have managed to manage the most serious health alert ever caused in Spain by Listeria monocytogene .

The discovery that Magrudis hid for thirteen days some of its products in the midst of the health crisis has been the final trigger that has led to an open and quarterless war between the two administrations, which had already had their plus and minus at the beginning of the crisis due to the delay in the activation of the alert due to an alleged error in the labeling of the meat samples to be analyzed.

The Andalusian government, through the mouth of its Presidency advisor and spokesman, Elías Bendodo, said yesterday to the Spanish City Council as the last responsible for not being detected until just a few days ago the existence of sausages and black pudding La Mechá brand in some stores .

Bendodo even questioned the Consistory's ability to develop the powers it has in this area and reiterated the announcement made by the Chairman of the Board, Juanma Moreno, to review them, if necessary, assume them exclusively by the Regional Administration.

Bendodo explained yesterday that it was the Board itself that had knowledge of the existence of these products after receiving the notice of the commercial area that had them and not through the municipal inspectors, as communicated by the City Council that presides over the socialist Juan Espadas.

"It is a very serious issue," said the spokesman for the regional executive, who insisted that "it is not normal" that municipalities - those of Seville, Granada and Malaga - have competences in public health, so it is going to Review this situation to "reinforce, complement or assume" those competencies.

At no time, according to the Board, did the City Council include these new products in the distribution lists that it sent to the regional health authorities. And this despite the fact that on August 24, municipal inspectors found in a store in a supermarket chain in Seville sweet chorizo manufactured by Magrudis among a game of that manufacturer that immobilized.

Requirements

This information, the Board complains, was not transferred by the City Council, despite the previous requirements that had been sent to them.

If on that date I had known that the sausages and black pudding were still on the market, they say from the Board, it could have acted before.

In statements to Efe, the Deputy Minister of Health, Catalina García, insisted that on the 19th they asked the City Council for the list of products for sale by Magrudis and that on the 20th they reiterated that request with a list of what was advertised in the Web. They received in response that there was no white Iberian loin zurrapa, paprika loin, homemade sausage or Iberian sausage, so "we were calm," according to the vice councilor.

On the other hand, from the Hispanic Consistory the accusations were rejected flat and an official writing is signed, signed by the general director of Public Health and Pharmaceutical Organization, José María de Torres, which confirms, according to its version, that the Andalusian Administration knew at least since August 20 that Magrudis made sausages, as well as meats.
