The thunderstorm weather that swept across Sweden during Wednesday was the worst so far this year.

- It was a very thunderous day yesterday. The busiest day of the whole summer, says Per Stenborg, SVT's meteorologist.

Continues on Thursday

And the situation looks the same even on Thursday. According to SMHI, there is a risk of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms all the way from Östergötland to Jämtlandsfjällen.

- You never know exactly where it will end up. But somewhere, there will surely be torrential rain and heavy thunderstorms. It can cause flooding in basements and ruins, says Stenborg.

He continues:

- But wherever it gets worst is completely impossible to say. That is why it is not a warning but a risk. It is local as it becomes the most powerful.

Trafikverket: "Keep the distances"

During the morning, thunder and rain have already hit in Värmland. That storm then moves east during the day. At worst, it is expected to be in the late afternoon and evening.

The Swedish Transport Administration encourages road users to be extra careful in keeping the distances on the road.

- If there is a lot of water on the road, keep a speed that will allow you to brake fairly quickly. Keep your speed up and keep your distance, ”says Sofia Lindahl, press officer of the Swedish Transport Administration.

The Swedish Transport Administration is preparing at the same time for the thunderstorm to affect train traffic during the day.

- We have no thunder-related problems at this time. But we know that thunder can affect the railway and we are prepared for it, says Lindahl.

Sun back during the weekend

For the weekend, however, we can breathe out again. The thunderstorm moves further away to the northeast during the night towards Thursday and then loses power. Instead, from Friday and throughout the weekend, sunshine is expected in much of the country - although the high summer heat does not look like coming back.

- It gets quite a lot of sun - locally maybe 25 degrees. But you will notice that it is another mass of air. It is drier and cooler even though it is still warm for the season, says Per Stenborg.
