- This means that Akademiska can spend more time on what is more difficult to plan, for example, the acutely ill or patients who need highly specialized care, says Åsa Himmelsköld, Director of Health and Medical Services at Region Uppsala.

The areas in Lasaretten in Enköping will focus on are surgery - bile and hernia surgery, orthopedic surgery of the hip and knee prosthesis and urology - surgery of the prostate, bladder and kidney stones.

- The idea is that the laser therapy will in the long term take care of all patients in these areas, says Åsa Himmelsköld.

The aim is to improve the efficiency of care while gathering specialized care in one place - with staff working in teams and research that follows patients.

- If you do the same thing often, it often leads to you getting better at what you do. In this way, the quality of care can increase and become more accessible, says Åsa Himmelsköld.

"Exchange" between the hospitals

Will this mean a relief for the Academic Hospital?

- Some operations that would have been carried out at Akademiska will be carried out in Enköping and vice versa. It will be a change you can say - but that should lead to each hospital being able to plan better and thus make its work more efficient.

Are there any risks that Enköping's laser will be profiled - I think of the patients who go there with disorders other than these, such as emergency care?

- No, but it is not easy to make such a change because we have to think about the entire care chain. At the same time as we make this change, we are also planning for new care centers that will act as a body between primary care and hospital care, says Åsa Himmelsköld.
