There are currently four bandygymnasiums in the county, but only the Bessemer school in Sandvikens has had so-called national intake. This means, among other things, that the business receives a grant because it receives students from all over the country. Sandviken, which has had national intake for more than 40 years, is now getting rid of it.

- We don't really know what that means, but we will get a little less resources but we will try to keep the same quality of education anyway, but we think we will do this well, says Johan Ohlsson, assistant principal at the Bessemer School.

But what does it mean to get rid of the support from the National Sports Federation?

- We currently have three full-time coaches and we will have two in the future.

Ljusdal has made the trip before

The only place in the county that previously had national recruitment is Ljusdal, which was also the first in the country. But they got rid of their status as national gymnasium (RIG) in the 90s and are now, like the county's other bandy gymnasium in Edsbyn and Bollnäs and from next year also Sandviken, nationally approved sports education (NIU). This means focusing on local and regional recruitment.

- After we lost the national intake we lost applicants in the beginning and it became a weakness but we still continued to work hard and have done well since then, says Lännart Nilzon, who is responsible for the bandy gym at the Slottegymnasiet in Ljusdal which currently has 21 students.

- Maybe the National Sports Federation does not think that the bandy is worthy of a national intake, but on the whole I think that every place that has bandy gymnasium can work hard to improve the quality.

"Bandy needs national gymnasium"

Although the bandy gymnasium in Sandviken says it is well equipped for the new conditions, Johan Ohlsson wants the Bessemer school again to receive a national intake.

- Absolutely, absolutely! I think the bandy needs it and we will try in the future to become a national gymnasium again, concludes Johan Ohlsson.
