12 July 2019The state of natural disaster was declared for the damage caused by the explosion of the volcano on the island of Stromboli on 3 July. This was decided by the regional government chaired by Nello Musumeci, meeting for the occasion in Catania, advancing the request for an emergency declaration to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers. Damages and safety measures were quantified by the Civil Protection Department of the Sicilian Region Presidency, headed by Calogero Foti, in twenty million euros.

Bring back serenity
"As promised yesterday, during the inspection in Ginostra - says Musumeci - we are intervening promptly to restore serenity between the inhabitants and safeguard their safety and that of all the tourists who visit the island of the Aeolian Islands. The report transmitted to Rome punctually photographs the first, indispensable, financial necessities. And beyond the removal of the considerable layer of ash, it is necessary to immediately start the necessary works to protect the town, considering the devastating effects on the stability of the territory that the eruption has caused ".

Hydrogeological risk
According to the Sicilian Civil Protection, there is a hydrogeological risk due to the conditions in which large parts of the territory devastated by fires occur. In particular, the side overlooking the village of Ginostra is more endangered, which, in the case of heavy rains, could be hit by a considerable mass of debris, with a further serious risk for public and private safety. "Specifically, according to the estimate of the costs, at least five million euros - adds the president of the Region - will have to be used to clean all natural waters, to rebuild dry stone walls in support of ancient terraces, to consolidate ridges and sea front cliffs overlooking the airport and the planting of the destroyed vegetation ".

Secure the port
"Another two million will have to be destined for the perfect restoration of essential services - electrical and telephone installations compromised by fires - while most of the resources will have to be committed to the safety of the port looming slopes and to guarantee the possible use of the pier which Brief will be affected by works intended to improve its functionality. It is the docking point - explains Musumeci - and it is in effect the only possible escape route from the island and for this reason it will necessarily have to be sheltered from any event that could compromise regular use ".

Aqueduct under control
For the rest - the Sicilian governor assures - no damage to the municipal waterworks has been detected and the volcanic activity of Stromboli, constantly monitored by all the centers of competence, is not an imminent danger for the population. But now it is also necessary that the central government, as the Region has done, makes its presence felt on the island, granting without delay the resources that serve to calm the present and future of this magnificent pearl of the Aeolian archipelago ".
