Rainy weather hit the island of Kyushu on Wednesday, with landslides, floods and rivers as a result. In Saga prefecture, more than 100 millimeters of rain was measured in just one hour in some areas.

At least one man is said to have died as a result of the fall, reports the Reuters news agency. The man was found lifeless in his car during Wednesday morning, when the car must have been welded into the bodies of water.

Another person is feared dead in the city of Fukuoka, according to information provided by local police to the Japanese news agency Kyodo.

Calls for evacuation

On Wednesday, Japanese authorities issued a special warning and ordered up to 670,000 people to evacuate, Kyodo writes. This applies to residents of three prefectures: Fukuoka, Saga and Nagasaki.

The country's meteorological institute has issued the highest possible level of warnings, level five, in the northern parts of the island. Heavy rainfall is expected there for the next 24 hours - up to 200 millimeters of rain can fall in northern Kyushu, Kyodo reports. Several trains and roads are closed as a result of the weather.

Car manufacturers stop business

Companies on site on the island are also affected. Toyota has banned work in its car factory in Kyushu on Wednesday night, and car manufacturer Daihatsu will also stop work in their factories, Reuters reports.
