In Mauritania, torrential rains in the southeastern city of Selibaby resulted in three deaths and hundreds of homeless families. Between Saturday and Monday, it fell on this great city in the Senegal River valley as much rain as in almost six months in this region, resulting in loss of life by drowning. Local elected officials and regional authorities work to organize the first aid of the populations.

The districts of the capital of the Guidimakha region are still under water. The weather has caused casualties and destruction of homes as explained to RFI Mohamed Vall Mekhallé, the mayor of Selibaby.

" In human lives we recorded three losses: boys aged 8, 9 and 12 years old. Then, we recorded extremely important damage in the neighborhoods - material damage in the districts -, the total disappearance of precarious dwellings like the banco, the tents, the huts, etc. "

The floods have not spared the buildings in hard, according to the mayor of Selibaby which focuses on the immediate needs of the affected populations.

" Everyone has been touched. Even hard houses have also been damaged, "so temporary shelters, tents or tarpaulins will be needed for homeless families. " And then food, because they've lost everything ! "

The Mauritanian government dispatched a delegation led by the Interior Minister to Selibaby to assess the scale of the incident.
