Third fatality due to the listeriosis outbreak declared in Andalusia due to the consumption of contaminated meat, which has already poisoned 196 people. A 74-year-old patient with Listeria monocytogenes infection died on Tuesday at 1:15 p.m., as reported by the Ministry of Health and Families.

This patient had previous pathologies and was included in the population at risk. The patient was hospitalized in the ICU of the Virgen del Rocío Hospital in Seville. It is the third fatality that has occurred since the Board declared the health alert on August 15 and ordered contaminated meat to be removed from the market.

The largest outbreak of listeriosis declared in the country has caused a political earthquake in Andalusia. The leader of the Andalusian PSOE and former president of the Junta de Andalucía, Susana Díaz, has lashed out on Tuesday against the Andalusian Government of the PP and Citizens for "missing the truth" and acting "late, badly and with lack of transparency" in the health crisis

Susana Díaz, this Tuesday, at the regional headquarters of the Andalusian PSOE in Seville.

Susana Díaz has demanded the president of the Junta de Andalucía, the popular Juanma Moreno, to appear in the Andalusian Parliament to give explanations about the health crisis and at the same time has exempted the Seville City Council, governed by the PSOE, and with powers in this issue.

The Consistorio Hispalense, led by the socialist mayor Juan Espadas has competence in food safety in catering establishments, retail stores and food industries in a city of almost 700,000 inhabitants. In fact, the inspectors of the municipal laboratory are the ones that are currently doing analysis and controlling the Magrudis factory in which the contaminated shredded meat of the La Mechá brand was made.

The City Council of Seville "has given explanations and the mayor has put the first in line" from the first moment, Susana Díaz has argued to exonerate the consistory of any responsibility in the listeriosis outbreak.

On the other hand, the president of the Board "is not only to give recognition and awards; he is president for the good and for the bad" and in a situation of this type "must be at the forefront of the decisions that are being taken" , added the general secretary of the Andalusian PSOE.

A van from the City Council of Seville arrives to collect samples at the headquarters of the Magrudis company, where the owners and lawyers of the family are located.

Susana Díaz, former rival of Pedro Sánchez in the socialist primaries, has avoided answering the question about a possible repetition of the general elections before the paralysis of the PSOE negotiations with Unidad Podemos for a possible investiture of Sánchez as president of the central government. "There will be time to answer these types of questions; now the priority of the Andalusian PSOE is to control the crisis as soon as possible" related to the listeriosis outbreak, he added.

Lower the number of hospitalized

As announced by the Ministry of Health and Families, begins to remit the outbreak of listeriosis. The total number of patients admitted to public and private hospitals with suspected infection or with infection confirmed by Listeria monocytogenes has been reduced by 20% in 24 hours, as reported by the Board on Tuesday.

Thus, the number of hospitalized people, this Monday night, was 86 when the previous day rose to 108. Specifically, the patients admitted to public hospitals were 68 (compared to 83 the previous day). Of these, 26 are pregnant women (28 the previous day) who are under antibiotic treatment and three patients remained admitted to the ICU (same as the previous day). In these last 24 hours there have been no deaths or abortions or infections in newborns, says the Board.

The distribution by provinces of these admitted patients is as follows: Seville, 46 (the previous day 61), Huelva, 15 (14 on the previous day); Cádiz, 1 (2 the day before); Malaga, 4 (3 the day before); Córdoba, 1 (2 the day before); and Granada, 1 (the same number as the previous day). In Jaén and Almería there are no admitted patients.

The number of patients hospitalized in private hospitals with suspected Listeria infection is 18 (25 the day before). Of these, 5 are pregnant women (6 the day before) and an admission to the ICU. The distribution by provinces of these patients is as follows: Seville, 15 (22 the previous day) and Cádiz, 3 (same as the previous day).

This Monday, three new cases of Listeria monocytogenes infection located in Seville were confirmed. In total, the number of people with infection confirmed since the start of the alert, decreed on August 15, is 196 (the previous day was 193). Most of these cases are located in the province of Seville, 161 (82.1%), followed by Huelva (17 cases), Cádiz (10), Málaga (4) and Granada (4). In the provinces of Almería, Córdoba and Jaén there are no confirmed cases.

Magrudis defends himself

The manager of Magrudis, the company that manufactured the shredded meat origin of the listeriosis outbreak, José Marín, has said that they do not know what has happened and has opined that "the listeria outbreak should not be as evident when the veterinarians of the same Seville City Council and Board technicians have been trying to find him for several days and they don't get it. "

He has indicated in an interview in the Cadena Ser that at the moment no "nothing" has been found in the heat treatment and, when asked about where the focus may be, he replied: "If the technicians are not able to find him imagine that I am a neophyte on this subject. "

He has refused to make "conjectures" without knowing what has happened and recalled that a bacterium can be anywhere because "we live with them daily and do not see each other."

He has denied that works were made in the factory, since it was only "a small extension made of plates" and has assured to ignore on which exact day of June that remodeling was communicated to the Board and when they began to elaborate meatloaf there.

He has defended that he has not done anything outside the law and that they comply with all control protocols, and he does not understand "the tidal wave that has been mounted" on his company, since he sees the issue "politicized" with the meetings that are taking place finished.

"This is not magic"

Meanwhile, the acting Minister of Health, María Luisa Carcedo, has responded to the Magrudis company that elaborated the meat that has caused an outbreak of listerioris that "this is not magic", there were "some germs" and "the sick are there and pollution too. "

Carcedo has made these demonstrations in San Sebastián, where he has indicated that the head of the company "will have to say what he considers", but "this is not magic". "There were some germs that grew, that were identified and that generated disease, this is the real thing, it is what exists," he added.
