So, in 2013, 3.9 million people with diabetes were living in Russia. At the end of 2018, there were 4.8 million people.

Last year, the Pskov region became the region with the highest incidence of diabetes, where 4.8 thousand cases of this disease were per 100 thousand people.

A high incidence rate was also noted in the Tula and Ivanovo regions (4.5 thousand cases per 100 thousand people), Karelia (4.4 thousand) and Oryol region (4.3 thousand).

The smallest cases were in Dagestan - 1.1 thousand cases of diabetes per 100 thousand of the population.

According to the endocrinologist, doctor of medical sciences Anna Goncharova, the increase in cases of diabetes in the country is more associated with a change in the lifestyle of Russians.

“Diabetes mellitus is rightly considered a non-infectious pandemic of our century. This is a heterogeneous disease, it has several different causes, the common manifestation of which is an increase in blood glucose. And the largest number of cases is diabetes mellitus, which occurs against the background of overweight, insulin resistance and is more related to our lifestyle (overeating, refusing sports, etc.) and the lack of desire to change something. This problem should be solved by the joint efforts of endocrinologists and psychologists, ”explained Goncharova.

According to the expert, the diagnosis of diabetes in Russia is currently at a decent level, but not all patients continue to be responsible for their health and control their blood glucose levels.

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease associated with impaired glucose uptake and insufficient production of the hormone insulin.

Earlier it was reported that the number of Russians diagnosed with obesity over the past five years has grown by almost one and a half times.
