This is again a sad record: the SPA registered a 17% increase in abandonment this summer with 8,000 animals collected. Jean-Charles Fombonne, president of the SPA wants to appeal to the Minister of National Education, Jean-Michel Blanquer to raise awareness in schools about abandonment and abuse of animals.

What is your assessment after this new rise in animal abandonment this summer?

There has been an increase in dropouts this summer in correlation with what we have seen since the beginning of the year. In addition, we were saved because we had an increase in adoptions during the month of July and the month of August which ended in a figure comparable to that of last year.

In July and August, did people adopt more animals in shelters?

Yes, and that may be the results of the campaign we did in June. We saw a lot more people coming and especially to take cats.

How is it that animal welfare is at the heart of French concerns, and that we are seeing more and more abandonment? You plead this morning for a better education on animal welfare.

Punishment exists but it is still ineffective. We would like to set up a SPA volunteer presence system in schools so that we can educate children about the animal condition.

We have prepared courses, interventions and I will contact in a few days with the entourage of the Minister of Education, Jean-Michel Blanquer to have a mission letter to train children and draw their attention to the condition animal.

You are clearly appealing to the minister to generalize animal welfare education?

Yes the call is clear because I think this is the cardinal point of education for animal welfare.

Jade, a child, testifies and believes it would be better to bring the children directly to the SPA, what do you think?

It is more complicated to welcome children to the SPA. We must also take into account the emotional aspect because there are not only pretty little cats and puppies.

How to help the SPA without adopting?

It's very simple, we live only donations: for 1 euro, 75 cents are spent on food, accommodation or veterinary care.
