Pierre-Hugues Herbert (48th worldwide) and Adrian Mannarino (57th) were eliminated from entry on Monday at the US Open.
Herbert took a set at the Australian Alex de Minaur (38th) before yielding in 3:05, 6-4, 6-2, 6-7 (6/8) 7-5.
Mannarino also took a set to his British opponent Daniel Evans (58th), but lost in 3: 2, 6-4, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.
In the next round, Evans will face another Frenchman, Lucas Pouille (27th), or the German Philipp Kohlschreiber (71st). For his part, De Minaur will be opposed to the Chilean Cristian Garin (32nd).
