France's Fiona Ferro (74th) qualified Monday for the second round of the US Open by defeating Australia's Daria Gavrilova (95) 6-3, 6-4.

Ferro, 22, is the first tricolor representative to pass the first round this year at Flushing Meadows, with Caroline Garcia eliminated earlier.

In the second round, Ferro will face fellow countryman Kristina Mladenovic (54th) who dismissed the German Angelique Kerber (14th), winner at Flushing Meadows in 2016.

"It's still the third time this year, Ferro said about Mladenovic, when we played in Rome, it was a good match (won by Mladenovic 7-6, 6 -2) At Roland, it was harder, I missed the first set "(victory Mladenovic 6-3, 7-6).

This time, however, it will not be on clay, but hard that the two players will compete.

"I know I have my chances, but I'll have to be relaxed and solid (...) I'll have to move it, I think it's still its weak point," Ferro analyzed.
