The G7 decided to unlock an emergency aid of 20 million euros for the Amazon, mainly destined to the shipment of seaplanes that fight against the fires that devastate the jungle, French President Emmanuel Macron and his Chilean counterpart, Sebastián Piñera , have indicated.

In addition to sending an air fleet, the G7 decided on a medium-term relief plan for reforestation that will be presented to the UN General Assembly at the end of September. In order to implement the plan, Brazil's consent and joint work with NGOs and local populations will be necessary.

This "initiative for the Amazon" was announced after a session of the G7 summit dedicated to the environment, during which the situation facing the Amazon rainforest was addressed.

Macron has made the situation in the Amazon one of the priorities of the meeting, calling on Saturday the "mobilization of all powers" to fight against fire and reforest. "We must respond to the call of the jungle that burns today in Amazon in a very concrete way," he added, after questioning the Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro.

According to the latest figures, 79,513 fires have been detected in Brazil since the beginning of the year , of which just over half have occurred in the Amazon. Pressed by the international community, the country ended up taking action on Sunday, sending two C-130 Hercules planes to the burning area.
