13 June 2019Unemployment in the OECD area decreased by 0.1 points, falling to 5.2% in April, when there were 33.2 million people without work in the area that brought together the 36 industrialized countries. Also in the Eurozone the rate marked a drop of 0.1 for the second consecutive month and is at 7.6%. Spain registered a decrease of 0.2 points (to 13.8%, with an almost continuous monthly descent from the peak of July 2013) and Lithuania (to 5.8%).

On the other hand, the unemployment rate increased by 0.2 points in Portugal to 6.7%, but remains at over 10 points below the worst level, reached in January 2013. In Italy, unemployment remained at 10.2%, as in March, confirming itself as one of the highest levels among the advanced countries, as is the case for female and youth unemployment.

Among the major European countries, Germany remains at 3.2% and France at 8.7%. Outside Europe, unemployment fell in the USA (-0.2 to 3.6%), Canada (-0.1 to 5.7%) and Japan (-0.1 to 2%) , 4%). Conversely, the rate in Korea increased (+0.3 to 4.1%), while it remained stable in Mexico (at 3.5%). More recent data, relating to May, revealed a further drop in unemployment in Canada (-0.3 points at 5.4%, the lowest figure since these statistics were available in 1976), while the US remained stable at 3.6%.
