In Burkina Faso, in 2018, nearly 12 million cases of malaria were recorded with 4,000 deaths, of which 60% are children aged 0 to 5 years. Mosquitoes are becoming more resistant to insecticides used to impregnate mosquito nets. It is in this context that, in the laboratories of the National Malaria Research and Training Center (CNRFP), researchers are breeding several species of mosquitoes to test the effectiveness of insecticides used on mosquito nets.

Regions such as Cascades, Boucle du Mouhoun or Sud-Ouest must wait until October. This year, the Burkinabe government and its partners decided to test two new so-called " new generation " mosquito nets.

" It's really in the pilot phase. We realized that mosquitoes were becoming more resistant to conventional insecticides such as permethrin used to impregnate mosquito nets in previous campaigns, "said Dr. Adama Gansané, director of the National Research Center and training on malaria.

Thousands of mosquitoes, from several families, are reproduced in the laboratories of the CNRFP. These mosquitoes are then subjected to insecticides. " There are certain regions of Burkina where transmission is done all year round. Therefore, it is important if we really want to eliminate malaria , we must target all vectors that contribute to the fight, "said Dr. Moussa Guelbeogo, entomologist.

This year, more than 12 million impregnated mosquito nets will be made available to the population. According to the researchers, 60% of mosquitoes, vectors of malaria transmission, bite outdoors.
