China reacted angrily Saturday at the latest US tariff increase on Chinese products, promising that Washington will "suffer the consequences" of this "harassment".

European officials have also warned US President Donald Trump against yet another escalation of the trade war between the two countries - which should dominate the G7 summit agenda that begins in Biarritz.

Furious for the rise on Friday by Beijing of tariffs on US products representing $ 75 billion in annual imports, Trump has opted for the bidding war.

The tenant of the White House announced the same day that all of the 550 billion dollars of Chinese products imported into the United States will be hit by even heavier tariffs by the end of 2019.

A spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of Commerce denounced in a statement Saturday a "unilateral trade protectionism and harassment".

"This action seriously undermines the multilateral trading system and the normal order of international trade, and the United States will suffer the consequences of its actions," he pledged.

"China urges the United States not to misjudge the situation, not to underestimate the determination of the Chinese people, and immediately stop their erroneous approach."

By the end of 2019, the tariff trade war should affect all imports and exports of both countries.

European Council President Donald Tusk warned the United States on Saturday that a continuation of economic tensions between Beijing and Washington would lead the world to a "recession".

Emmanuel Macron, host of the G7 summit, also warned against "trade tensions" that "are bad for everyone".
