US President Donald Trump said Friday night that he would not prevent US Central Bank boss Jerome Powell from resigning.

"Would you like him to resign?" Asked a journalist before leaving for the G7 summit in France. "If he did, I would not prevent it," replied the billionaire Republican evoking the man he named in early 2018 but regularly criticized vehemently.

"I do not think he's doing a good job, I do not think he's a very good chess guy," he added.

Earlier in the day, Donald Trump had wondered whether Jerome Powell, whom he accuses of clamping down on the US economy, was "a worse enemy" than Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Mr Trump criticizes the Central Bank for having raised rates too fast at the end of 2018 and caused a strengthening of the dollar, which handicaps the United States in the midst of a trade war.

Donald Trump's violent attacks on the central bank of the United States break with all the Fed's traditions of independence.
