The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said 54 people have been killed in torrential rains and floods that have swept several states in Sudan since the beginning of last month.

Floods have destroyed some 26,000 homes, flooded large areas in some areas and affected more than 194,000 people, according to the United Nations.

"The humanitarian community is concerned about the likelihood of more floods," the UN office said, adding that most of the deaths reported were due to the collapse of roofs and electric shocks.

The worst affected areas were White Nile State in the south, but the capital Khartoum and other areas were also affected.

The Office of the United Nations (UNO) confirmed the need for an additional $ 150 million from donors to cope with the floods, in addition to $ 1.1 billion to help the humanitarian situation in Sudan.

Since early August, most states have been experiencing heavy rains and floods that have collapsed homes and the main road linking Khartoum to the southern city of Al-Abyad has been blocked.
