Bangladesh police said on Saturday they shot dead two Rohingyas in a refugee camp, accused of killing a political leader of the ruling party this week.

Some 740,000 members of this Muslim ethnic group fled, in August 2017, military repression in Burma - countries where the majority of the population is Buddhist.

They have joined 200,000 other refugees already settled in camps on the other side of the border in Bangladesh.

"The two men died while being taken to the hospital," local police inspector Rasel Ahmad told AFP.

The incident took place in the Jadimura refugee camp in the district of Cox's Bazar (southeastern Bangladesh).

According to Ahmad, the two Rohingyas were shot dead after a manhunt aimed at apprehending the suspects of the murder on Thursday of a leader of the ruling party in the country, the Awami League.

The execution of this politician, Omar Faruk, had caused great emotion. Hundreds of angry people blocked several hours on a road to the refugee camps and vandalized shops frequented by Rohingya.

"We want justice done as quickly as possible," said Abdul Matin, a close associate of the political leader.

Human rights activists told AFP on condition of anonymity that the two Rohingya had probably been shot dead during a police staging.

Bangladesh and Burma signed a Rohingya repatriation agreement in 2017. But two attempts in November and this week failed because the refugees refused to leave.

These, stateless, require security guarantees, as well as Burmese nationality.
