The Swedish Society for Nature Conservation is one of the organizations that has appealed against the Land and Environmental Court's decision to allow a substantial expansion of its refinery operations in Lysekil.

They have also demanded that the government take over the issue. Now the organization has gotten what they want. On Friday announced that they will test whether the planned expansion, which will lead to sharply increased carbon dioxide emissions, should be allowed or not.

- We are pleased that the government is taking this responsibility and hope that this means that the large increase in emissions from Preemraff's expansion will not go away, writes Johanna Sandahl.

According to the Environmental Code, the government can take over the legal examination in specific cases, but this is extremely unusual.

But since Sweden has decided on a net zero emission of greenhouse gases in 2045, the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation believes that the government is best suited to decide on which activities should be allowed.

- It would be a great disappointment if the government, which is responsible under the Climate Act, would approve doubling the emissions from a fossil fuel-producing business, writes Johanna Sandahl.
