It was on Friday morning that the government announced that they intended to test whether Preem should be allowed to vigorously expand its refinery in Lysekil.

The issue has attracted a great deal of attention as it will entail heavy carbon dioxide emissions.

On Friday at 11.30 am, Isabella Lövin (MP) will hold a press conference where she is expected to tell why the government has decided to take over the issue and explain how the investigation will be conducted.

Increased greenhouse gases

It was last November that the Land and Environmental Court granted the extension, which Preem wants to do to be able to convert heavy oil into cleaner forms of fuel for the ship market.

The expansion, which is estimated to cost SEK 15 billion, doubles the company's carbon dioxide emissions. According to Preem, this concerns increased greenhouse gases from 1.7 million tonnes to 3.4 tonnes per year.

This corresponds to 17 percent of today's total emissions from all industry in Sweden - or more than six times the domestic aviation's annual emissions.
