August 23, 201919.41 In our country, 50% of the antibiotics consumed is used in chicken, turkey and pig farms: these are the data of the national plan to combat antibiotic resistance, presented in a study by Gemelli. Among the most resistant strains, salmonella and E.coli, the latter found in 73% of turkeys, in 56% of chickens and in 37.9% of fattening pigs. The figure for humans is slightly lower: 31.8 %. Resistance can develop either through direct animal-human contact or by consuming food from resistant animals.
