  • Investiture: Open Arms and the G-7 summit deepen the tension between PSOE and Podemos

We have finally decided not to request the appearance of the President of the Acting Government, Pedro Sánchez, before the Plenary Session of Congress, to give explanations on the management of the Executive of the Open Arms crisis, and has opted to request explanations from the Vice President Carmen Calvo. This request for purple training is made jointly with Compromís and ERC after several days of conversations between the groups.

The vote of Unidos Podemos is decisive in the Permanent Deputation where the request for appearance by Sánchez that PP and Citizens have made will be decided. However, the purple formation together with the Valencian and Catalan formations have chosen not to support this appearance, which makes the petition unfeasible, which will be voted on next week.

The petition for the vice president to appear also has little chance of moving forward unless PP and Citizens decided to vote in favor of this proposal.

The deputy spokeswoman for Podemos, Ione Belarra , had spoken of requesting the appearance of the President of the Government in an extraordinary plenary session to account for the management of the Open Arms crisis.

Speaking to Europa Press, Belarra pointed out that Sánchez has acted "too late" when it was a matter of humanitarian rescue and said it was important that Pedro Sánchez go to Congress and explain "why they have managed this crisis like this".

"They were people who had lived a very hard journey and were in unworthy conditions on the deck of a ship," he said, or what he believed required to have acted "more quickly."

The role of Calvo

However, the management of Unidos Podemos has finally decided to opt for explanations from the Vice President of the Government alleging that in recent days Sánchez has been on vacation and that the responsibility for this matter and public appearances have fallen to Carmen Calvo.

And in that context, sources of the purple formation have added to Europa Press that their group will not support the extraordinary appearance of the President of the Government who have registered the PP and Citizens. Nor will Compromís and ERC.

If the three parties vote against, the proposal of the right-center formations will be rejected in the Permanent Delegation next week.

The parliamentary groups of PP and Citizens justified their request to appear for what they call "gangs" of the Government around the Open Arms ship crisis. Specifically, they want Sanchez to explain in that plenary session "the changes in the Government's position regarding the migration crisis in the Mediterranean , its inaction to the actions of mafias that traffic with people in this area and what contacts they have had with other governments of the EU in recent weeks on this issue. "

The holding or not of that plenary session will be decided next week in the Permanent Deputation of the Congress, which is the highest body of the Chamber in a non-ordinary session. In this body, PP and Citizens, along with Vox, whose support is taken for granted, add 29 votes, above the PSOE, so the position of United We could was decisive to add an absolute majority.

Distancing

The Open Arms crisis has evidenced the differences between PSOE and Unidos Podemos when it comes to dealing with this type of episode. Those from Iglesias have demanded from the beginning that the dozens of refugees and migrants who were aboard the NGO ship should be assisted.

Coinciding with the refusal of the PSOE to the last offer of Podemos for the investiture, the confederal group has also criticized the statements of Vice President Carmen Calvo about the Open Arms crisis and demanded that he rectify the threat of applying sanctions
