WASHINGTON (Reuters) - US Defense Secretary Mark Esper confirmed on Thursday the killing of Hamza bin Laden, the son of al-Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden.

"That's what I understand," Esber said in an interview with Fox News when asked if Hamza bin Laden had died.

"I have no details," he said. "If I have details, I'm not sure how much I can share them."

US media reported in early August that bin Laden had been killed in the last two years in an operation involving the United States, citing US intelligence officials.

President Donald Trump and other senior officials have refused to publicly confirm or deny his death.

"I don't want to comment," Trump told reporters.

The State Department revealed that Hamza was the number 15 of Osama bin Laden's 20 sons and his third wife. He is believed to be thirty years old.

Hamza has published audio and video messages calling for attacks on the United States and other countries in retaliation for his father's death in Pakistan in May 2011.
