Middle East Eye cited a statement issued by the family of Rami Shaath, the son of former Palestinian diplomat and negotiator Nabil Shaath, on Wednesday, saying Rami had been detained in Egypt since July on charges related to helping a terrorist group based on “results” that he was not allowed or To his lawyer examined.

Rami's wife, a French national who has lived in Egypt for seven years, was also deported "by force and arbitrarily" after watching his arrest in Cairo early last month, the statement said.

Rami, 48, has dual Egyptian-Palestinian citizenship, a Cairo-based activist who was active in Egyptian politics, and in 2015 founded a joint initiative of the BDS movement in Egypt.

The family statement, which Rami's wife shared on her Facebook page, said Rami was arrested for openly opposing the US-led peace plan between Israel and the Palestinians, called the "Deal of the Century."

"Prior to his arrest, Rami clearly expressed his opposition to the deal of the century and any Egyptian participation in the Bahrain conference. Today Rami is being arbitrarily detained for his legitimate and peaceful political activities, and charged in a criminal and unfounded criminal case against him," the statement said.

The statement said he was being held in the notorious Tora prison under harsh conditions. His wife, Celine LeBron, called for his release and said his detention was a "disaster". "He is a detainee for his peaceful activities," she told AFP.
