This makes Sweden one of the countries with the lowest maternal mortality in the world.

"It is important to emphasize in such cases that we have a very good and safe maternity care in Sweden," says Annika Esscher, chief medical officer for women's health care at the Akademiska hospital in Uppsala.

According to the latest compilation from the Swedish Association for Obstetrics and Gynecology, cardiovascular disease and pregnancy poisoning are the most common causes of women dying in connection with childbirth.

Annika Esscher's thesis from 2014 also states that women with a foreign background are at higher risk of dying in connection with or in the suites after a birth than women born in Sweden.

- So it is, and it may have to do with the fact that they have a picture of a disease we do not know and they may not think about, but also that there may be language barriers, says Annika Esscher, who cannot comment on it the present case.

In Rasha Mkahel's case, the reason for her death is not yet clear. The hospital has started an internal investigation and Rasha's husband Khalil Antar has reported the incident to the Inspection for Health and Care.
