Lille City Council has decided to lower the maximum speed allowed in the city at 30 km / h since Monday 19 August.

The inhabitants of the city of Lille will have to learn to lift the foot. The city sets up the generalization of the limitation to 30 km / h in almost every street, every Monday, until 21 October.

The purpose of this measure is to reduce accidents and make the air more breathable. Municipal services change all ground markings and signs.

Opinions that diverge

At the wheel of his taxi, Magalie already foresees the problems that will be put to him the limitation to 30km / h: "If someone has an important appointment, we will not be able to deposit it on time." Laurent, driver takes this news with a certain philosophy: "We will consume less and there will be less noise. It is not very fast but we rarely drive more than 40."

Stanislas DENDIEVEL, deputy mayor of the city, assures that a slow-speed city "is a peaceful city": "The passage of 50 to 30 km / h is 18 seconds on a kilometer and the journeys rarely go beyond 5 kilometers, being less stressed, because the city is appeased, is also our goal.

Risks halved

At 30 km / h, the risks are halved and the mortality, in case of impact with a pedestrian, is 10%, against 80% at 50 km / h. For Gaëlle, this is enough to justify this measure: "At the level of safety, for pedestrians and cyclists, it is very good that the speed to 30. The impacts will be less serious and it will force everyone to be more vigilant . " Nevertheless, she doubts "that everyone respects" this limitation.

To enforce this limitation, controls and verbalizations are planned and will come after an initial period of information and awareness.
