A new species of dinosaur belonging to a genus called Stegosaurus, which existed about 168 million years ago, has been found in Morocco's Middle Atlas mountains, according to a report in the Guardian newspaper.
A team from the Museum of Natural History in London is studying the remains of the dinosaur, which is said to be armored and recognizable from its bones that resemble a prominent plate of the spine and mutations on its tails.
British scientists believe that this type of dinosaurs is the most famous, and the oldest of its kind ever discovered.
Middle Jurassic
Although the remains of the dinosaur were few and only confined to a few vertebrae and bone from the upper arm, the scientists concluded that they belonged to the genus and a new type of dinosaur dating back to the Middle Jurassic Age, much older than the most famous Stegosaurus. It has been found so far.
The newspaper revealed that the research team led by Dr. Susanna Midment called Adratiklit Bouhafa - meaning "mountain lizard in the Amazigh language" - in relation to the area where the remains were found.
"What is interesting is that there may be many thyrophoric dinosaurs found in places where they have not been excavated so far," the newspaper quoted Midment as saying.
The team finds that further discoveries in the region can provide a better view of the distribution of this group of dinosaurs, and may result in a more complete sample.
