The transition to a civilian power in Sudan, born of the historic agreement between the military and the protest, takes shape this Wednesday, August 21 with the enthronement of the Sovereign Council. Its president, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, was sworn in before the highest judicial authority. The other ten members of the Sovereign Council then swore little before the President. The official appointment of a consensus prime minister must follow later in the day.

Under the terms of the political agreement signed on Saturday, August 17, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan will be in charge for 21 months, before a civilian succeeds him for the 18 months of transition that will remain.

The names of the civilian members of the Sovereign Council were announced this Tuesday, August 20 in the evening , with two days late on schedule . At issue, disputes within the Forces for Freedom and Change, which represent the protest movement.

This new body is composed of six civilians and five soldiers. The Council includes two women but also soldiers of the old regime, which creates a palpable discomfort. The Council will have to oversee the formation of the Government and the Transitional Parliament.

As for the consensus Prime Minister, Abdallah Hamdok , he was to take an oath on Wednesday night. He will have to work quickly to form his government by August 28th. A first meeting between the Sovereign Council and the government is scheduled for 1 September.
