  • Editorial: The Open Arms Crisis

PP and Citizens on Wednesday registered a request for the acting President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, to appear in the Congress of Deputies on an "urgent" basis to explain his immigration policy and the crisis caused by the Open Arms. For this appearance to be held, an extraordinary session of the Permanent Delegation should be convened.

Both formations presented a joint brief in which they request the president of the Lower House, Meritxell Batet (PSOE), to call an extraordinary session of the Plenary so that Sanchez explains the "changes in the position of the Government" regarding the migration crisis in the Mediterranean.

Likewise, PP and Citizens also demand explanations about what they consider "inaction" of the Executive with the "mafias" of human trafficking and about the contacts maintained with the European Union regarding migration.

The deputy mayor of Madrid and member of the direction of Citizens, Begoña Villacís, already advanced this morning and said that "none of us know what is the immigration policy" de Sánchez "beyond addressing specific cases, or not addressing them, or attend them one day yes and the next no ".

At the moment, the Spanish flag ship Open Arms is already docked in Lampedusa after the order of the Italian Prosecutor's Office, which ordered the landing of migrants after a visit on board. For its part, the Spanish Government yesterday signed a Navy ship - the Audacious - on its way to Lampedusa to escort the Open Arms back to Spain.

Robles: the Government "will act accordingly"

EUROPE PRESS | Madrid

The Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, has warned about the crisis caused by the Open Arms ship that the Government of Spain "will act accordingly if Spanish law has been violated."

The Spanish NGO ship has left Lampedusa in the direction of Sicily under the order issued by the prosecutor of Agrigento after the landing of the 83 migrants who remained aboard the vessel with the Spanish flag. The Vice President of the Government, Carmen Calvo, also recalled that the NGO ship can only provide humanitarian aid, it is not authorized to rescue.

"We have to wait for what the Italian authorities decide and, depending on that, Spain will take appropriate decisions and, of course, if Spanish legislation has been violated that no one doubts that the government will act on consequences," Robles explained in a hearing before the media communication in Gran Canaria.

Robles has justified the decision to send a Spanish Navy ship to Lampedusa for "humanitarian reasons and in a very serious emergency situation" and has celebrated "that the prosecution has put an end to that violation of humanitarian law by Minister Salvini."

He has also reiterated the commitment of the Spanish Government to take charge of the Open Arms migrants. "We are a serious country, we are going to follow the events at the minute, we are going to see how the situation evolves but we are a serious country and we are going to assume that commitment," Robles concluded.
