The visit would have taken place in early September in Copenhagen. But after the president expressed that the US wants to buy Greenland from Denmark - and both Danish and Greenlandic politicians have waived the opportunity - the visit was canceled.

- It's so absurd that I hardly know what to say. At the same time, I'm not entirely surprised. Trump is crazy, but it's nothing new, says Merrick Tabor, political scientist and university deputy at Stockholm University.

He does not believe that the decision in the long term will affect the relationship between the US and Damnark.

- This was not very well thought out by him, but nobody sees this as linked to long-term American politics. It could be a meeting later.

Merrick Tabor believes Trump canceled the state visit because he was personally offended.

- The reactions from both Denmark and Greenland were that no one took the play about the purchase seriously. Many politicians publicly distanced themselves from the statement and he realized that the purchase was not on the map. He was offended and did not think there was any point in the visit, says Tabor.

"Feeling stubborn"

But that Trump wants to buy Greenland is not really surprising, says Dag Blanck, professor of North American studies at Uppsala University. The United States has previously expanded by purchasing territory, such as the Great Louisiana Purchase in 1803 and Alaska.

- Trump also has his background in the real estate industry, so for him this is no wonder, says Blanck.

However, Dag Blanck believes that Trump's reaction is unusual for a head of state.

- He makes the case a personal relationship and his reactions to getting a "no" are private. It makes him stand out, but that has been his style all along, says Blanck.

"A strategy for attention"

Elizabeth Walentin, a public relations consultant who previously worked as a campaign strategist for the Democrats in the United States, believes that Trump's scheduled meeting could be a strategy to get more attention.

- But it's hard to know why he does what he does. Maybe he wasn't really interested in a visit, she says.

She continues:

- He makes a small question a big one and the consequence will be a canceled visit. Obviously, it becomes a news and then he gets attention, is seen and heard, she says.
