The Prime Minister of Denmark said on Wednesday she was "upset" by the cancellation of a visit by Donald Trump following the rejection of her bid to buy Greenland, a Danish autonomous territory, but said there was " no crisis "between Copenhagen and Washington.

"I am obviously upset and surprised by the cancellation of the US President's state visit," said Mette Fredriksen at a press conference.

But "Denmark and the United States are not in crisis", she added, stressing that the invitation of the Scandinavian kingdom "remained valid".

The White House announced Tuesday night that Donald Trump's visit to Denmark scheduled for September 2-3 was canceled.

Late last week, the US press had revealed that Donald Trump had inquired about the possibility for the United States to buy Greenland, a huge autonomous territory of some 56,000 inhabitants, attached to Denmark.

Mr. Trump then published a series of tweets confirming his interest in the icy Arctic island, triggering a salvo of half-indignant, half-amused reactions in Greenland and Denmark.

While traveling on the territory, Mrs Frederiksen had described as "absurd" the purchase proposal of the US president.

The Danish royal house, the origin of Mr Trump's invitation, expressed his "surprise" at the announcement of the cancellation of his trip, in a written comment sent to the public TV channel DR.
