"There has been a discussion ever since the study was completed and an expectation that new national guidelines will be forthcoming on this issue," says Johanna Belachew, chief of women's health care at Gävleborg Region.

Better survival for the children

The study was done at Sahlgrenska University Hospital and 15 obstetricians around the country participated. The preliminary results of the study have shown that it may be better for the child that an entry is made in week 41, instead of week 42.

The Dalarna Region has changed its routines according to the result and all startups are now in week 41.

- What is positive for us is that they have started and tried it for a few months now. We would love to hear how it has worked and about their experience. We discuss this with them, says Johanna Belachew.

Routine examination in week 41

In Region Gävleborg, the startups take place in week 42, but there is always an examination of the pregnant mother in week 41 to check that the pregnancy is going well. If something seems risky, then you choose to start up earlier.

Is there anything negative about starting a week earlier?

- It increases the number of startups and we know that startups can in itself make delivery more complicated. So there are risks with the earlier start-ups and of course you have to be part of the discussions, says Johanna Belachew.
