It was the night of Wednesday Swedish time that Donald Trump announced that he was canceling his state visit with NATO member Denmark. The reason is that the US president got his hand on his idea of buying Greenland from the Danes.

The state visit would have taken place as soon as September 2-3 and preparations were well advanced. This is stated by Danish Prime Minister Mette Fredriksen during a hastily announced press conference.

Mette Fredriksen started by saying that she thinks it is sad that the state visit does not come off and that it all came as a surprise.

- I am annoyed and surprised, I had been looking forward to this visit. This was an opportunity to celebrate Denmark's close relationship with the US and, above all, to highlight the strong bilateral cooperation. The United States is one of our most important allies, she said.

Want to see closer cooperation with the United States

The prime minister was pressed with questions about how she sees that it was precisely the Greenland snob that prompted Donald Trump to cancel the state visit. Mette Fredriksen explained that she is behind the Greenlanders - and again explained that Greenland is not for sale.

Above all, however, she focused on the two countries' close relationship and that the challenges in the Arctic require even closer cooperation.

- Our desire for strengthened strategic cooperation is firm, therefore the invitation is firm.
