The animal welfare inspectors were met by a stench of ammonia from the cats' urine and feces in a home in Kalmar County. The stench was so nasty that one of the animal inspectors described a burning sensation in the airways and chest.

The County Administrative Board purchased gas masks in response to the incident, but the Swedish Work Environment Authority is now directing criticism following an inspection at the County Administrative Board's work environment work. The County Administrative Board does not have a written risk assessment linked to the need for personal protective equipment and now the Work Environment Authority requires that it be remedied before 8 October.

The four kittens and 14 adult cats that were in the home were killed.
