On August 1, the Israeli army spotted a Palestinian gunman 250 meters from the Gaza Strip border with a Kalashnikov assault rifle and grenades, but the Israeli soldiers were surprised.

Immediately after being spotted, the Israeli army sent a number of soldiers from the Golani unit, an elite infantry force, to counter it, according to the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth in its Tuesday edition.

But an IDF investigation showed that the group of soldiers sent refused to participate in the exchange of fire with the Palestinian.

Yediot Aharonot explained that "as the unit approached the infiltration site, the commander of the division left the military vehicle and began exchanging fire with him, which resulted in moderate injuries, and two other soldiers were slightly injured during the exchange of fire with the Palestinian."

In the aftermath, more reinforcements were sent to hunt down the Palestinian gunman, the newspaper said, but a group of soldiers refused to participate in the exchange of fire with the Palestinian.

"They said they were afraid of being hit by friendly fire because of the heavy presence of soldiers in the area," the newspaper said.

The Palestinian gunman clashed with Israeli forces inside Israeli territory for two hours before he was killed.

She pointed out that "the identity of the Palestinian gunman, named Hani Abu Salah, from the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas.

However, the Qassam Brigades did not claim responsibility for the attack, and members of the Abu Salah family, including his mother, told the Anatolian correspondent at the beginning of this month, that their son, "Hani" (23 years) carried out the attack in retaliation for the killing of the occupation forces to his brother (Fadi), on 14 May 2018, despite being a “seat” with no lower limbs.

According to the newspaper, an investigation was carried out by the Israeli army, which decided at the end of the suspension of the work of a division commander, two soldiers and a military vehicle driver "because of the failure to act as expected during an operational event."
