The attack on Koutougou, in which, according to a last assessment, 24 soldiers were killed, five are missing and seven others were wounded is considered the deadliest ever perpetrated against the Burkinabe armed forces since the beginning of the terrorist attacks in 2015 .

" It is a record that is heavy, it is a balance sheet that challenges us ," said President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré in a message to the nation after the attack Monday Koutougou detachment in the province of Soum, in northern Burkina Faso. " August 19th is a dark spot in the life of our national army ," admitted the Burkinabe head of state.

" But beyond emotion, he stressed, what is important is that we must reaffirm our solidarity, our support, our support to the defense and security forces ."

The opposition demands the resignation of the government

For the Union for Progress and Change (UPC), condemnation alone is not enough. " You have to tell the truth and cure the evil at the root, " the opposition leader's party reacts. The UPC accuses the government of having failed in its mission of securing the country. " It's a team overwhelmed by the turn of events, " say party officials.

The UPC demands the outright resignation of the government in place and the appointment by President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré of a new team whose primary mission is to defend the territorial integrity and security of the people of Burkina Faso.

The reaction of the ruling party was not long in coming. In a statement, Simon Compaore, the interim president of the People's Movement for Progress states that " the time must be imperatively at the gathering and any other attitude must be condemned with extreme vigor ".
