The US president, Donald Trump, admitted Sunday that Greenland is strategically interesting for his country, but clarified that it is not a priority issue.

"It's just something we talked about," Trump responded to reporters after knowing his possible interest in buying this island, which is politically dependent on Denmark.

The president admitted that "the concept emerged" and that he considered "strategically interesting", but clarified that it is not a matter that is in the foreground.

"We are very good allies with Denmark. We protect Denmark as we protect large portions of the world," he said.

Horad before, the White House economic advisor, Larry Kudlow, said Trump wants to "take a look" at a possible Greenland purchase.

"I don't want to predict a result, I'm just saying that the president, who knows one or two things about buying real estate, wants to take a look at a purchase of Greenland," Kudlow said, consulted by the Fox News chain.

US media revealed last Thursday that Trump has asked his advisers at the White House to find out if it is possible to buy Greenland from Denmark, a matter he has mentioned several times in recent weeks during meetings and dinners.

Kudlow said Sunday that it is a "developing" issue and said that years ago President Harry Truman also wanted to buy that island.

Truman (1945-1953) offered Denmark 100 million dollars for the island after the end of World War II, The Washington Post reported Thursday .

According to the Post, the White House has already discussed the legality of the hypothetical purchase, the process to incorporate a territory with its own government and also where the money for the acquisition would come from.

For its part, the CNN television network reported that Trump, a billionaire who made his fortune in real estate development, has asked White House lawyer Pat Cipollone to study the possibility.

The media versions do not clarify the reason why Trump would be interested in buying Greenland, although some conjecture with its natural resources and others with its geostrategic importance because of its proximity to the Arctic.

Greenland is an island located in North America, northeast of Canada, and covered by ice on 75% of its surface.

Its 2.1 million square kilometers make it the largest island in the world, although inhabited by only about 56,000 people, mostly of Inuit ethnicity.

Politically, Greenland belongs to Denmark, but it is an autonomous territory that since 2009 manages all powers except foreign policy, defense and monetary policy.
