LONDON (Reuters) - Ground defenses shot down an Emirati drone that bombed Misrata airport on Sunday morning, a military spokesman said.

This came in a statement published on its Facebook page "Operation Volcano of Wrath" launched by the Government of Wefaq to counter the attack of retired Major General Khalifa Hifter on the capital Tripoli.

The statement said the plane was one of two that attacked Misrata airport and tried to target the planes and airport infrastructure.

It is noteworthy that this Emirates plane is not the first shot down by the forces of the government of reconciliation, the government announced last June in the downing of a plane with the emblem of the UAE.

The statement promised to respond decisively within a very short time to Hifter's targeting of civilian sites.

Al-Jazeera correspondent Ahmed Khalifa quoted local sources as saying that the Emirati air force is participating along with Hifter's forces in targeting several locations in Misrata and others in the outskirts of the capital belonging to the Government of Al-Wifaq.

Since April 4, Hifter's forces have launched an offensive to control Tripoli that has killed more than 1,000 people and injured more than 5.5,000, according to the World Health Organization on July 5.
